Richard Gutierrez and KC Concepcion will soon be seen together for the first time on the big screen for the movie titled For The First Time. Their characters meet in Greece and they spend an unforgettable summer together in a lovely village built on tall cliffs, offering a breathtaking view over a submerged volcano.
The cast members of this Star Cinema film shot the movie in the beautiful Santorini island in Greece, which was created because of a volcanic eruption. KC describes this island as a place in between two famous Hollywood settings: on one side was the setting of the movie Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants while on the other side was the island where Hollywood stars shot the movie version of Mamma Mia!
"Alam mo pag magsu-shoot kayo abroad, talagang tulungan. Nagbubuhat kami ng film. Kanya-kanyang diskarte, e," said Richard regarding the difference between shooting abroad and locally.
Richard's brother Ritchie Paul joined the ten-day shooting period in Greece. "Siya kasi ang available...kasama ko lang siya, pag may kailangan ako, siya yung pinapakiusapan ko. Saka gusto rin niyang makita to see how movies are made. Gusto niyang mapanood how movies are made kasi gusto niyang mag-aral sa Big Foot in Cebu."
Richard is referring to Big Foot Entertainment's film school in Cebu called the International Academy of Film and Television. Students of the IAFT are guided by filmmaking and acting professionals who have worked on major projects in Hollywood.
In For The First Time, Richard plays Seth, a rich, impulsive playboy who runs away from serious relationships and doesn't give much thought about the women he goes out with. "Siya ang tipo ng lalaki na happy-go-lucky, adventurous," describes Richard. "He would take on different jobs regardless of how risky it may be. Ang character ko, ang dami nang inikot. Gusto niyang lumayo sa Pilipinas dahil may mga family conflicts ako sa Pilipinas. Ako ang type of guy na ayoko ng conflict. Ayoko ng issue so umalis ang character ko so pumunta siya ng Greece. Nagpunta na siya sa Bahamas, nagtrabaho na siya kung saan-saan. Then napadpad siya sa Santorini kung saan naging boatman ako dun."
He met KC's character, a tourist, through common friends in Santorini Island. KC describes her character Pia as an "independent strong-willed girl. Girl power siya talaga. Kahit ano gagawin nya kahit mag-isa lang siya. Feeling n'ya yung mga babae, kaya ang lahat. Until she meets Seth, na naging ex [-boyfriend] na ng barkada n'ya. Kilalang-kilala na niya si Seth bilang ex ng mga friends niya. Until natuto siyang mag-relax and natuto siyang mag let go at hayaan kung ano ang naramramdaman niya."
After having a memorable time in Greece, Seth runs away since he becomes too scared of being involved in a long-term commitment with one woman. But after coming to his senses, Seth returns to Manila to pick up where he left off with Pia. Will the young lady accept his apology or will she harbor anger for what he has done?
For the First Time marks several firsts: it is the first movie of the daughter of Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion; it is the first time that Richard has worked with Star Cinema; and it is also Richard's first time to work with a female director in the person of Joyce Bernal. This film is also part of the 15th anniversary celebration of Star Cinema.
Richard describes his leading lady as someone who is humble and caring. "After spending ten days with KC in Greece, talagang nakapag-bonding po kami dun at nakilala ko siya ng husto. Pero may mga ugali pa din si KC na dun ko lang din na-discover.
"Kung iisipin po natin, lahat tayo, ‘pag inisip natin si KC, meron agad tayong certain image na naiisip na parang prinsesa siya. Pero kung makikilala niyo po siya ng husto, try traveling with her. Napaka down-to-earth po ni KC, at lahat po ng tao, inaasikaso niya pati mismo yung cameramn namin at yung assistant cameraman. She cared for them.
"There was a point nga na...after a long day shoot, pagkabreak, kami ng kapatid ko, bagsak kami sa kama. Nakita namin si KC, may dala siyang food. She prepared food for us. Kaya kung anumang image yung naiisip natin sa kanya, burahin natin yun kasi ‘pag nakilala n'yo siya ng husto, napakabait na tao niya," says Richard about the daughter of Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion.
The GMA-7 star enjoyed working with Direk Joyce Bernal for the first time. "[It was] very fun. Actually kami na, e," he joked. "Masaya siya talaga kasama. [It's my] first time to work with a female director. This is another first for me. Nakakapanibago lang. I like her. She opens you up, [she tells me] ipakita mo kung anong totoo."
Star Cinema's For the First Time opens in theaters nationwide starting August 27, 2008.
