He loves her eyes!

When Richard Gutierrez introduced his new leading lady during the “Best Friend’s Girlfriend (BFGF)” press conference last January 17, the guests looked expectantly at the door of GMA’s 17th floor restaurant. But to everyone’s surprise, Marian Rivera was already in front – hidden inside a humongous cake! Text by Jillian Q. Gatcheco. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.
It was quite a letdown when she didn’t dance her way out, as we have seen in the movie’s trailer, but nevertheless, she looked gorgeous, a perfect match to her dashing leading man all clad in black.
Hitting it off right
Direk Mark Reyes started off the presscon by talking about Richard and Marian’s chemistry. “When we started doing [BFGF], we didn’t know what to expect. I haven’t seen Richard do this much comedy for a long time. For some reason, [he and Marian] hit it off right away. Hindi uubra ang ‘kamandag’ ni Vergel kay MariMar! Maganda ang chemistry nila, nakakatuwa; they support each other. Maraming kwentong hindi ko pwede sabihin dahil baka patayin ako ni Marian at ni Richard!”
But lucky for us, direk Mark did share a couple of kilig stories about the two during our past set visits! One of his kwentos included how Marian is Richard’s cellphone-keeper, and how Richard gives in to all of Marian’s food requests!
Marian confirms the latter, saying that she has always known how nice Richard is because he never failed to greet her even when she wasn’t ‘MariMar’ yet. “Hindi siya suplado sa akin. Hindi niya pinaramdam sa akin na siya si Richard Gutierrez. Tapos habang nagtatagal yung shooting namin, sobrang maaalahanin yan. Yung tipong, ‘Kumain ka na ba? Ano gusto mong kainin?’ Lagi siyang ganoon sa araw-araw ng shooting days namin.”
“ Lagi kong binabati yung kagandahan ni Marian,” says Richard, giving his leading lady a killer smile.
“Usisera!” quips Marian with a laugh, nudging Richard in the ribs.
To prove that what he said was true, Richard continued, “Stunning naman talaga yung beauty ni Marian, especially her eyes…”
Marian vs. Angel?
One member of the Press asked how Marian is compared to Richard’s tried-and-tested leading lady Angel Locsin, who was his partner for three consecutive Valentine flicks [Let the Love Begin (2005), I Will Always Love You (2006) and The Promise (2007)].
Mother Lily, who was present at the presscon, remarked, “I think this is the best team-up. I think magkamukha nga sila! Isang gwapo, at isang gwapa, di ba?”
Richard, who was pressured to reply by everyone, said, “It’s new. Iba. Yung acting range ni [Marian], kung ikukumpara mo sa matagal nang [artista], magaling [talaga] siya. It’s refreshing for me to have a new partner, and si Marian pa naka-partner ko. Yun nga, nagkasundo kami ni Marian, and iba yung chemistry at rapport namin. Mage-enjoy kayo dito. ”
When it was Marian’s turn to comment on Mother Lily’s answer, she said, “Thank you, kung ganoon. Kasi sa bawat trabahong ginagawa ko, lahat, binibigyan ko ng atensyon. Lahat ginagawa ko para gumanda siya. So hindi lang basta umarte lang ako. Lagi kong sinasabi na lagi kong pinagbubutihan yung trabaho, sa kahit anong trabahong ibigay sa akin.”
Richard adds, “Ang taas ng energy level niya, kahit puyat na puyat na kami, nakukuha ko energy ko sa kanya.”
Direk Mark agrees: “Richard has had the same partner for the past three years. Ngayong may bagong partner si Richard, bagong Richard ang makikita niyo.”
More projects
Are the two open to doing more projects together?
“Bakit naman hindi, di ba? Pero syempre, may sari-sarili pa kaming shows na umeere sa TV. One step at a time [dapat]. Pero in the future, why not?” says Richard.
Everyone clapped and hooted when someone commented, “Hihintayin ko na lang ang Captain Barbell Meets Darna!
My Best Friend’s Girlfriend premieres on February 10 and will air nationwide a day before Valentine’s. Richard invites everyone to be his date on the 13th: “It’s a great movie, mage-enjoy kayong lahat. It’s refreshing and very light. Di ba sabi nga, great things happen unexpectedly? Itong team up namin ni Marian happened unexpectedly, and it turned out to be a great, great, movie, that’s why dapat niyo talaga panoorin!”
Direk Mark adds, “You’ll enjoy it, you’ll laugh, you’ll fall in love, and you’ll see Marian dance out of a cake – that’s [enough already]!”
