BFGF, a must-see!
Article posted February 12, 2008

With hundreds of fans waiting in line to see the grand premiere night of My Bestfriend’s Girlfriend (BFGF), you’d know the movie would be a hit even before it started. Text by Jillian Q. Gatcheco. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.

“Good” is an understatement

The red carpet was literally an obstacle course where you had to jump, twist, push, and shove just to enter SM Megamall’s Cinema 10 last February 10. Once inside, you’d see colorful tarpaulins of the movie’s cast, raised by avid supporters who fully embraced this new Richard-Marian team-up.

Excitement was in the air when the title credits came up; people didn’t even mind sitting on the steps just to watch this much-anticipated flick. As most premieres go, sporadic cries of excitement and quirky remarks from the crowd made the movie experience even better.

Richard Gutierrez was exceptionally funny in BFGF—a refreshing change after all his angsty characters on the small and big screen. Direk Mark Reyes was right when he said that people will see a different Richard this time around because he got all his energy from Marian Rivera. Their onscreen chemistry was surprisingly undeniable, as shown in the true-to-life way they portrayed their characters.

To say Marian did a good job in BFGF is an understatement. She was no doubt the life of the film, a sassy chameleon of an actress who can get away with being jologs and still be believable as a sophisticated character. Her role as Grace is palaban yet conservative, an ironic contrast to her job as a waitress in a bar along Quezon Avenue.

Her girlfriends are her exact opposite: they’re loud, liberal, and flirtatious to a certain extent. Another scene stealer is Chariz Solomon, who seems to have found her niche in comedy as Grace’s best buddy Chiqui.

In contrast to Grace’s character, Akiko (Ehra Madrigal), Evo’s ex-girlfriend whom he initially wanted to pursue again, is the classic sosyalera who speaks fluent English and dresses to impress. Ehra easily gave justice to the role and provided additional eye candy with her sexy yet classy outfits.

Although JC De Vera didn’t have as much screen time as Richard and Marian, he gave an impressive performance nonetheless, especially during the confrontation scene with Richard by the pool. As Mark, JC is Grace’s boyfriend and Evo’s responsible, business-minded best friend.

As the title suggests, BFGF is the story of Evo who meets his best friend Mark’s girlfriend (Grace) at a stag party. When he does find out that Grace is Mark’s girlfriend, he blackmails Grace to agree to his demands. He wants her to pretend that they’re together to make Akiko jealous and win her back. But evidently, his brilliant plan backfires when he realizes that Grace isn’t the woman he thought she was.

What to watch out for

There are a couple of scenes that stood out from the rest.

Up first is the one with Evo (Richard Gutierrez) inside the elevator when he rehearses his apology to Akiko. That was Richard at his goofiest—and most adorable. He’ll have audiences doubling up with laughter, especially at the point when he leaves the elevator!

Second is the part where Grace and Evo are in the car. Grace grabs his license and ultimately discovers the big mystery behind his name. (Clue: You would never expect it!)

Third, the Swan Lake ballet. There is a priceless scene before the show where Akiko introduces Grace to her friends and treats her condescendingly. As the palaban girl that she is, Grace gives a retaliation to remember!

And of course, Marian’s dance out of the giant cake was also hilarious; the trailers are just a sneak peek of what really happened at the stag party!

These, of course, are apart from the kilig sequences at the beach and at the park, where Grace and Evo begin to see beyond their first impressions of each other. Perfectly complemented by Shamrock’s song “All I Need,” all the mushy parts are definitely going to make you blush. And yes, there are a lot of kisses—a butt squeeze, even!

It’s impossible to be disappointed by BFGF if you’re looking for a feel-good movie that tugs at your heartstrings and makes you want to hold your loved one’s hand. It says that it’s great to fall in love, no matter how unexpected or wrong, no matter how silly or sudden. Because really, it will just hit you when you least expect it. Take it from Evo and Grace.

BFGF airs nationwide starting February 13. Don’t miss it!
