No moderation of love and ambition in V-Day offerings
By Rito Asilo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

If it’s cotton-candy entertainment you want, Richard Gutierrez and Marian Rivera’s first big-screen team-up, Mark Reyes V’s simplistic “My Best Friend’s Girlfriend,” has a few surprises up its sleeve—not the least of which is the easy vibe and surprising chemistry between the two leads:

After a not-so-amiable first meeting at a stag party, rich but irresponsible Evo (Gutierrez) and poor but hardworking graduate-school student, Grace (Rivera), find themselves pretending to go steady, to make Akiko (Ehra Madrigal), Evo’s ex-girlfriend, jealous—this, despite the fact that they hate each other’s guts!

Soon, however, the constantly bickering couple starts enjoying each other’s company—then, they realize what a bind they’re in—because they’ve fallen in love! Problem is, they don’t want to betray Mark, who happens to be Grace’s boyfriend—and Evo’s best friend! Love just doesn’t seem to get easier in the movies these days!

To please its TV-weaned viewers, Reyes’ film tends to be loud and livid—courtesy of supporting actors who think that being over-the-top feisty is the way to win moviegoers’ hearts.

As for the production’s leads, Gutierrez’s two-dimensional role is no stretch for the actor, but the movie serves as an important test to see if its leading lady has what it takes to be an effective rom-com heroine, beyond the “Marimar” persona that has made Marian a celebrity.

With her smooth Castillian features, eager-to-please attitude and ever-ready smile, the hardworking Rivera has blossomed into a marketable, charming actress. Yes, she still has some awkward moments, but she’s learning to enjoy playing—and exploring—the thespic field more and more!
